Term Four 2009
  • Classes for Term four have already commenced.
Term One 2010
  • Classes commence Saturday 6th February.

Soundscapes is for children aged from five to seven years.

All students participate in the core subject of Soundscapes Musicianship and have the option of learning violin or keyboard in pairs or individually.

Core subject

Soundscapes Musicianship

This 30 minute class builds on skills and knowledge gained in Music Playground.

These classes allow children to continue to discover and explore essential musical concepts in a fun and challenging environment. Participants build on their literacy and aural skills, developing a strong foundation of musicianship vital for any student wishing to undertake future musical study.

Options

Group instrumental lessons

Classes available:

  • Keyboard/Piano (30 minutes - two students per class)
  • Violin (30 minutes - two students per class)
  • Individual keyboard or violin lessons (30 minutes)

Research indicates that children are more likely to continue with music in the long-term if their early experiences with music are enjoyable.

With this in mind, the Junior Music School (JMS) introduces young children to the violin or keyboard/piano in a program where the focus is on discovering, creating, and enjoying music, rather than on learning music literacy through the piano or violin. (Students learn these musical literacy skills through the Soundscapes Musicianship class.)

After participation in the group introduction keyboard or violin classes, students progress to the group keyboard or group violin classes.

JMS Choir

From time to time, students enrolled in the Soundscapes and the Firebird programs may be offered the opportunity to take part in singing projects and performances at the University.

In April 2008, a group of JMS students joined the UWA Orchestra and Chorale, the Winthrop Singers, soloists Sara Macliver and Robert Hofmann, and conductor Dr Nicholas Bannan in a performance of Carmina Burana in Winthrop Hall.
