Music Education

Our researchers in music education are well-known for their publications in leading journals such as International Journal of Music Education, Journal of Research in Music Education, British Journal of Music Education, Music Education Research and Research Studies in Music Education.

Colleagues have contributed to discussions in various international conferences and symposia ranging from International Society of Music Education biennial conferences to the European Conference on Musical Development, as well as having a large role to play in the Australian Society of Music Education Annual Conference in Perth in 2007.

Our researchers are also active in policy and curriculum developments, all having participated in national and international discussions about school curricula.

Assistant Professor Nicholas Bannan has been researching an innovative pedagogy for aural discrimination and musicianship, as well as examining vocal training and development in children.

Research Assistant Professor Robert Faulkner has been investigating children’s composing in the classroom and also peer teaching in a schools-based world music performance project.

Associate Professor Peter Moore has spent many years conducting the West Australian Youth Orchestra and developing Babies Proms for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and researching training techniques.

Winthrop Professor Jane Davidson, Assistant Professors Nicholas Bannan, Jonathan McIntosh and Robert Faulkner have run ensembles to examine the research-teaching and community service nexus. This includes projects which explore the interface of music education, therapeutic and health benefits:

  • Catch Music

  • Music Mayhem
Aimed at people living with mental illness
  • Making Music, Being Well
