This season-opening concert will also see the Quintet combine forces with brass students from the UWA School of Music in the stunning surrounds of Winthrop Hall. Artistry! Concert 2: Beethoven 9Friday 24th April 7.30pm Winthrop Hall, University of Western Australia UWA Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus; Peter Moore, conductor; Penny Shaw, soprano; Fiona Campbell, alto; Roberto Abate, tenor; James Clayton, bass Following the outstanding success of 2008's Carmina Burana, the UWA Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will join forces with the Winthrop Singers and choirs from Hale School, Penrhos College, and John Forrest Senior High School to lift the roof off Winthrop Hall in a rousing performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The program will also include performances by the UWA Chorale and Winthrop Singers, directed by Nicholas Bannan. Artistry! Concert 3: Schubert & ProkofievSunday 31st May 3pm Octagon Theatre, University of Western Australia Rossini: Duet for Cello and Double Bass; Prokofiev: Quintet Op. 39; Schubert: Piano Quintet in A Major "The Trout" Fiona Coad, oboe; Alex Millier, clarinet; Paul Wright, violin; Alex Brogan, viola; Eve Silver, cello; Andrew Rootes, double bass; Jana Kovar, piano Formerly a member of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane-born Andrew Rootes returned to Australia in 2007 to take up the position of Principal Double Bass with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Andrew is joined by Paul Wright on violin, and an all-star lineup of local musicians for this afternoon concert of chamber music favourites. Artistry! Concert 4: Imagining SpacesPresented in conjunction with Tura New Music's 2009 Scale Variable series Saturday 15th August 7.30pm Octagon Theatre, University of Western Australia In this showcase of new media art, UWA Lecturer in Composition Chris Tonkin curates a series of performances featuring live instrumentalists and live computer sound processing. Featuring works by Chris Tonkin, Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, and British-based New Zealand ex-pat Dennis Smalley, and including performances by invited artist, world-renowned Canadian percussionist Morris Palter, this innovative concert brings the latest developments in new media art to the Artistry! series. Concert 5: Mozart & MendelssohnSaturday 5th September 3pm Octagon Theatre, University of Western Australia Mozart: Serenade No. 10 for Winds, K361 "Gran Partita"; Tippett: Little Music for Strings; Mendelssohn: String Symphony No. 7 UWA Chamber Winds; UWA String Orchestra; Peter Moore/Paul Wright, directors During almost 20 years on staff at the UWA School of Music, internationally distinguished performers, conductors and educators Peter Moore and Paul Wright have played a significant role in the musical education of a substantial number of widely-recognised musicians now working professionally in Australia and overseas. Under their direction, this concert showcases the talents of current senior wind and string students from the School of Music, performing a selection of chamber music by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Tippett. Concert 6: Concertos - Mozart & MoreFriday 2nd October 7.30pm Winthrop Hall, University of Western Australia UWA Orchestra; Peter Moore/Paul Wright, conductors; Suzanna Hlinka, piano Thanks to the generosity of the Vose family, the annual Vose Memorial Prize for Music provides the UWA School of Music with the opportunity to run an annual concerto competition, selecting one outstanding senior performance student each year for the prestigious Vose Prize. For the first time in the history of the prize, this special concert performance will see the 2009 Vose winner and other selected outstanding finalists perform a movement of their chosen concerto live onstage with the UWA Orchestra. The evening will conclude with a performance in its entirety of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 by outstanding young piano talent Suzanna Hlinka.
